Dress Code


*We have made some slight changes to the Dress Code for 2015-2016 school year, so please take time to read and review this section. The dress code is effective the first day of school.

DRESS CODE

The dress code is effective the first day of school.

UNIFORM LOGO POLICY

It is our policy that all uniform polo’s, Mass sweaters, and vests have our school logo on them. All new polo’s purchased at Schoolbelles and Sunshine Uniforms will have logos automatically on them. If purchased at department stores, a logo will need to be added. There are two options for our St. Barnabas Family’s to have the logo done properly.

REGULAR UNIFORM

Boys: Grades K-8- General Uniform Rules
  • Tailored dress pants - NO outside pockets, flares, hip huggers, outside decorations or dragging on ground; “Pants on the ground” is unacceptable.
  • A plain black or brown belt with no decorations must be used with pants that have belt loops. (Belts are optional for Kindergarten thru second grade)
  • Dress or polo shirt, no emblems or names except for St. Barnabas logo, all shirts must be tucked in unless banded; either long or short sleeves.
  • A white turtleneck or white T-shirt may be worn under dress or polo shirts. (must be tucked in)
  • A navy vest, sweater or St. Barnabas sweatshirt (without hood) may be worn over shirt/polo shirt. Sweaters may be worn over shirt/polo shirts. They may be plain navy blue, gray or white. Crew, cardigan or vest sweaters are the acceptable styles. Sweaters may not be oversized covering the uniform.
  • Plain solid navy, black, gray or white socks. “No Show” socks are prohibited and socks must cover the ankle.
  • Dress shoes: black or dark brown tie or loafers. Shoe laces must be tied at all times. No tennis shoes.
  • Earrings, tattoos, inappropriate hairstyles (including shaved, spiked or bushy natural curly hair) and any unnatural colored hair are NOT permitted. Length of boys’ hair should not touch shirt collar, hang below the bottom of the ear, hang in front of or on a student’s face or obstruct vision. Hair is to be neatly groomed and boys must be clean-shaven.
  • Two bracelets, one necklace may be worn and must not be excessive in size.
Boys Grades K-8:
  • Solid navy blue tailored dress pants.
  • A light blue or white dress or polo shirt.
Boys Grades 7-8 only have the following uniform option:
  • Navy blue polo shirt with tan khaki dress pants.
Girls: Grade K-8-General Uniform Rules
  • Slacks/pants- NO outside pockets, flares, hip huggers (low-rise), outside decorations or dragging on ground.
  • Tailored blouse or polo shirt, no emblems or names except for St. Barnabas logo, all shirts must be tucked in unless banded; either long or short sleeves.
  • A white turtleneck or white T-shirt may be worn under blouse or polo shirt. (must be tucked in)
  • A navy vest, sweater or St. Barnabas sweatshirt (without hood) may be worn over blouse/polo shirt. Sweaters may be worn over blouse/polo shirt. They may be plain navy blue, gray or white. Crew, cardigan or vest sweaters are the acceptable styles. Sweaters may not be oversized covering the uniform.
  • Plain solid navy, black, gray or white socks/ankle/knee socks, tights in cold weather (navy, black, gray or white). “No Show” socks are prohibited and socks must cover ankle.
  • Dress shoes: saddle shoes, solid color black, brown, navy blue tie or loafer. Shoe laces must be tied at all times.
  • No tennis shoes, moccasins (UGG type), slippers, slides/mules, open toe shoes, high heels and platforms are not appropriate for school (Shoes should not have heels any higher than 1 inch measured from the inside of heel).
  • One pair small stud earrings only.
  • Makeup, perfume, nail polish, tattoos and excessive jewelry or hair ribbons are not permitted.
  • Girls’ hair should be cut and trimmed so as to look neat and not hang in front of or on a student’s face or obstruct vision. Hair color must be your natural color. Fad hairstyles, such as beaded hair, hair wraps, corn braids and hair pieces are not allowed.
  • Two bracelets, one necklace may be worn and must not be excessive in size.
Girls Grades K-8
  • Navy blue slacks
  • A light blue or white tailored blouse or polo shirt
OR
Girls Grades K-3
  • A royal blue/white/gray plaid open arm style jumper or tunic style jumper with pleated skirt no shorter than 2 inches above the knee.
Girls Grades 4-8
  • A royal blue/white/gray plaid skirt or skort no more than 2 inches above the knee; skirts may not be rolled to make shorter.
Girls Grades 7-8 only have the following uniform option
  • Navy blue polo shirt with tan khaki dress pants, uniform skirt or uniform skort.

MASS UNIFORMS GRADES 4-8 ONLY

Mass uniforms are worn from *November 1st – April 30th for Liturgies, Prayer Services, Stations of the Cross, and/or at the teachers discretion.

Girls Grades 4-8: In addition to their school uniform, girls will wear a V-neck sweater, sweater vest, or sweater cardigan (navy blue, gray or white in color). These will be worn over their existing school shirts (no sweatshirts).

Boys Grades 4-8: Boys will wear a dress shirt and choice of tie, appropriate for school. They may choose to wear a V-neck sweater vest, sweater or sweater cardigan over this as well (navy blue, gray or white in color; no sweatshirts)

SEASONAL UNIFORM (Worn From *May 1st – October 31st)

Boys and Girls: Grades K-8- General Uniform Rules
  • Navy dress walking shorts, no more than 3” above knee.
  • No Cargo Shorts or outside pockets; no contrasting stitch, shorts with loops must have a plain brown or black belt without ornamentation; the “sag” look is not appropriate.
  • Short Sleeve Polo Shirt.
  • Socks – Plain white, navy or black. “No Show” socks are prohibited and socks must cover ankle.
  • Uniform shoes or white, gray or black tennis shoes. Shoe laces must be tied at all times using one (1) pair only and must match the color of the shoe.
  • Tennis shoes may be worn only with walking shorts.
  • Polo shirts must be tucked in unless banded. A white t-shirt may be worn under polo shirt.
Boys and Girls Grades K-6
  • Navy dress walking shorts.
  • A light blue or white polo shirt.
Boys and Girls Grades 7-8
  • Navy polo shirt with tan khaki shorts.

MISCELLANEOUS DRESS CODE INFORMATION

  • The principal and/or the assistant principal will make final decisions on these matters, including special dress days.
  • Uniforms can to be purchased through Schoolbelles, Sunshine Uniforms, or the Uniform Exchange. Uniform pants/slacks, walking shorts and polo shirts may be purchased at department stores. (Logo required)
  • If a child is out of uniform, a written note of explanation should be sent to the teacher. If a child is out of uniform without a written note of explanation, parents/guardians may be called and asked to bring a change of clothes. This decision rests with the Administration.
  • Special dress day and birthday clothing should be modest, appropriate and reflect the expectations of a Catholic school. No torn or ripped clothing or inappropriate words on shirts may be worn. Crop shirts, low-rise pants, or exceptionally tight clothing are not acceptable.
    All general school uniform rules apply.
  • If you want to ensure that clothing selections comply with uniform code, students are encouraged to have their teachers look at the item before tags are removed.
  • The class that has Liturgy or special activities may be directed by their teacher to dress more appropriately for that day’s activity.
  • Picture Day is a dress up day. No tennis shoes, shorts, T-shirts, jeans, or colored jeans are allowed.
  • All uniform infractions will result in a demerit.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLOTHES – All Grades K-8
  • St. Barnabas uniform shorts and t-shirts are mandatory for all grades. Uniforms may be purchased from the PE teachers or through the school office.
  • Label all PE clothing in permanent marker or ink.
  • Athletic footwear is worn during physical education class, which could be your child’s seasonal uniform shoes.
  • Socks must be worn.
  • For hygienic reasons, gym clothing and shoes are not to be exchanged between students.
  • A lost PE uniform must be replaced within one week.
  • Shoe laces, Velcro closures must be laced, tied or closed correctly.
  • Points will be deducted from a student’s dress grade for coming to physical education classes without proper PE clothes.
ON PE DAYS FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES K-3 ONLY: In place of the school uniform, students may wear their physical education uniform ALL DAY. From November 1 - April 30, students must wear a solid navy blue sweatshirt and solid navy blue sweatpants/wind pants over the P.E. uniform.
